FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
Rising young Russian stars Elena Nalimova (piano) and Pavlos Carvlahos (cello) will play an all Russian programme of much loved sonatas. The three cello pieces, all from the first half of the twentieth century, evoke the romanticism of Tsarist Russia to the torturous climate in Soviet times under Stalin's regime. Born in Russia, Elena Nalimova graduated from the St Petersburg Conservatoire with a First Class Honours Degree and obtained a Masters degree from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. She held The Inches Carr Scholarship for Accompaniment at the RSAMD and The Geoffrey Parsons Junior Fellow in Piano Accompaniment at The Royal College of Music in London. Elena won several prestigious accompaniment prizes, including the Megan Foster Accompanist Prize, RSAMD Accompanist of the Year Prize and Gerald Moore Award. Elena has given recitals in major venues throughout Russia and the UK including the Glasunov and National Philharmonic Halls (St Petersburg), Art Gallery Hall (Aberdeen), Grand Saloon, Drury Lane Theatre, St Martin-in-the-Fields, the Royal Opera House's Crush Room, St. James Piccadilly (London). Elena is currently writing the PhD (Performance) thesis at the Goldsmiths College, University of London, kindly supported by Nicola and Michael Sacher and David Raksavage. Pavlos Carvalho studied cello with his father Santiago and Stephen Popov before going to the Royal College of Music to study with Steven Doane and Jerome Pernoo. There, supported by a scholarship from the RCM and the Countess of Munster Trust, he graduated with distinction in solo and chamber music performance. He continued at the RCM as a Junior Fellow and assistant teacher of cello to Jerome Pernoo. Pavlos appears regularly as a soloist and chamber musician in the UK and abroad with a wide-ranging repertoire. He has won numerous prizes, including the Koblenz Chamber Music competition in Germany, the International Taneev competition in Russia and the Tunnell Trust in Scotland with Trio Belle Epoque. He performs regularly with the LPO Chamber Ensemble. Pavlos has also taken part in many master classes, including a BBC televised class given by Lynn Harrell and the Manchester Cello Festival with Janos Starker.
