BROADWAY COMES TO FESTIVAL 2008!
In deciding to adopt Broadway as the Festival's charity partner, we are hoping to add our voices to those
already calling for more to be done to alleviate the plight of the capital's homeless. A short walk along the
Earl's Court Road after midnight will make it absolutely clear why the festival is so pleased to have this
outstanding organization as our designated charity. Here's a little information about Broadway's work.
Broadway - from street to home
Homelessness in London
For most of the people Broadway supports, homelessness is a symptom of a life in chaos. A traumatic
childhood, spells in prison, drug or alcohol abuse, and severe mental health problems are common
amongst homeless people. Most of the people we work with have suffered a lifetime of challenges and
have no support networks to help them through the difficult times. Broadway recognises the need for
long term, individual support to tackle the complex problems they face and reach the goal of permanent
accommodation.
How we help individuals
Our services span the needs of vulnerable single people. Our Outreach Team links with rough sleepers
and the Broadway Centre in Shepherds Bush offers a range of services from showers, laundry and health
care, to employment advice and training. Four hostels offer accommodation and individual support to help
people overcome the particular barriers they face to finding and keeping a home. We help landlords in the
private sector to offer accommodation to people who have been homeless. We continue to support
vulnerable and isolated people when they move into accommodation. Our money advice and welfare rights
services help people to achieve financial stability. We help people to improve their literacy and to train in new
areas, such as IT, and link them with employment opportunities.
